Tea of Courage is pure Artemisia afra, sustainably wild-harvested from the clean air and soil of the Karoo highlands, where eland graze. It comes in a 25g or 50g bag, and there is a Digestion Blend of 25g, which adds mint and fennel.

Artemisia afra is one of South Africa's best-known traditional herbs. Umhlonyane in Xhosa and Zulu, and lengana in Sotho, both carry the sense of courage. In Afrikaans she is wilde als. Known in Europe as wormwood, this is the African wormwood, a plant with a very long human history.

Helena grew up with this plant. On the isolated Karoo farm where she was a child, it was what there was at hand. The tea is bitter, and she says unforgettable. A little lemon and honey is the traditional way to meet her.

Ingredients

  • Artemisia afra (Tea of Courage, small and large)

The Digestion Blend is Artemisia afra with mint and fennel.

How to use, as a ritual

For a cup of tea, steep a sprig about the size of a teaspoon (roughly 5g) in a cup of boiled water, covered, for a few minutes. Add lemon and honey to taste.

For a steam, put a handful of the herb in a pot of water and boil until it turns green and fragrant. Sit over the pot with a towel draped over your head and the pot, breathe in the steam, then rest.
